Dr. Sara Hamed

A forthcoming book

You were never meant to carry Islam. You were meant to be freed by it.

Most Muslims are handed rules to follow and sins to fear. Unburdened gives you principles, not an anything-goes approach, to reclaim a relationship with the Quran that is actually yours.

Unburdened, Reclaiming the Quran with Your Mind and Heart Intact, by Dr. Sara Hamed, standing as a hardcover book

يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُخَفِّفَ عَنْكُمْ

God desires to lighten your burden.
Quran 4:28

The journey begins

Too many of us experience Islam as a burden.

The burden of confusion, when religion seems full of contradictions.

The burden of tension, when faith and modern life pull in opposite directions.

The burden of despair, when truth feels increasingly hard to reach.

The burden of fear, when trusting your own mind and heart feels risky.

But these burdens are not the price of faith. Our deen was designed to work with our humanity, not against it.

Unburdened is the beginning of a different path: one that helps you shed these burdens, empowering you with transformative principles to reclaim the Quran for yourself.

Life is already heavy.
Islam should make that weight easier to carry, not harder.

If you've ever felt that way, this book may be for you.

Who it's for

For you if…

You've been longing for room to think, question, and explore.

You want to take ownership of your understanding.

You believe the Quran places real boundaries on interpretation.

You see understanding as a slow, gradual process of learning and refinement.

Not for you if…

You feel no need to look beyond the answers you already have.

You want an authority to think for you.

You believe the Quran means whatever we want it to mean.

You want final answers now that you never have to rethink.

Promises

My hope is that Unburdened will help you:

i

Stop waging war against yourself in the name of faith.

ii

Approach the Quran directly and with confidence.

iii

Trust your God-given faculties of reason and perception.

iv

Judge ideas by principles, not by who said them.

About the author

For over two decades, I've been wrestling with the version of Islam I inherited.

And I wasn't the only one. Many of the people around me were too. I watched some walk away from faith while others held on by a thread. Yet even though the struggle was shared, we each carried it alone.

I spent years searching for the opportunity to think out loud, test ideas, revise my assumptions, and pursue greater clarity with others. With family and friends. Within Muslim communities and institutions. But there was always something standing in the way, saying: "Stop. Not here."

My search eventually led me to a PhD in the Study of Islam from the University of Toronto. There, I learned the hard way that graduate school was not the place to explore the questions that mattered most to me. Questions about God. Questions about truth.

The turning point came when I discovered the work of the Syrian thinker Muhammad Shahrour. Academia had sharpened my thinking skills, but it was Shahrour's ideas that showed me how to direct them toward the Quran and the questions I had been carrying for so long.

What followed was finally building an understanding of Islam that became more coherent as it deepened. And with it, a lasting sense of relief and joy.

Now I'm ready to share this journey with you. That's why I've made this work my vocation.

Beyond Unburdened

Unburdened is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning.

Struggling alone

Lifting the burden

Building clarity

The journey continues

Sara's Letter

Unburdened is only the beginning. Learning a new way of approaching the Quran is one thing. Applying it to the questions that shape our lives is another. Sara's Letter is devoted to that work.

Each month, a meticulously crafted letter on some of the hardest questions facing Muslims today: morality, ritual, religious authority, difficult verses, heaven and hell, and how to live faithfully in a rapidly changing world. Not answers to accept uncritically, but ideas for your consideration as you build clarity for yourself.

Produced in print and delivered by mail. Designed to be kept: held in your hands, read slowly, and returned to again and again.

Sara's Letter opens following the release of Unburdened in Spring 2027. Waitlist subscribers will be the first to hear.
